During this time of yore, four magnificent dragons graced the skies and the waters: the Pearl Dragon, the Long Dragon, the Yellow Dragon, and the Black Dragon. These dragons were creatures of joy, frolicking in the sea, soaring through the heavens, and tending to the welfare of the people below.

One fateful day, while they danced amidst the celestial clouds, the Dragons beheld a heart-wrenching scene unfolding on the Earth beneath them. The people were on their knees, beseeching the heavens for rain. The land languished in a relentless drought, and the people faced dire straits as their crops withered, leaving them with scant sustenance. The dragons recognized the urgency of the situation and felt compelled to take action to save these suffering souls. Their mission: to seek an audience with the Jade Emperor, the supreme ruler of the celestial and terrestrial realms, and implore him to end the drought with life-giving rain.

Despite their pleas, the promised rain failed to fall for ten long days, leaving the Dragons disheartened. They came to a profound realization that the Jade Emperor's commitment to the people was perhaps less steadfast than they had believed. In this critical moment, they determined that the salvation of the people rested upon their own shoulders. Without hesitation, they conceived a bold plan: to draw water from the Eastern Sea and propel it into the sky. As this celestial cascade descended to Earth, it would shower the parched land, reviving the ailing crops.

Fully aware that their actions would enrage the Jade Emperor, the Dragons carried out their plan with unwavering resolve. When the life-restoring rain finally graced the land, the people erupted in joyous celebration, extolling their mighty benefactors, the Dragons.

However, the Goddess of the Sea, an informant to the Jade Emperor, revealed the Dragons audacious act. The Jade Emperor, consumed by wrath, knew that retribution was imperative. He issued a decree to his heavenly generals and their legions, instructing them to apprehend the four Dragons. Faced with overwhelming odds, the Dragons found themselves powerless to defend against their celestial captors and were swiftly brought before the heavenly palace.

The Jade Emperor pronounced a stern sentence: "Fetch four mountains to imprison them, ensuring they can never escape." The dragons were condemned to an eternity of captivity. Yet, in their confinement, they harbored no regrets. Driven by an unwavering determination to continue their benevolent work for the people, the Dragons transformed themselves into four majestic rivers. These rivers wound their way across towering mountains, through deep valleys, and traversed the vast expanse of the land from west to east, eventually merging with the sea. Thus, China's four great rivers came into being: the Heilongjiang (Black River) in the far north, the Huang He (Yellow River) in central China, the Changjiang (Yangtze, or Long River) in the south, and the Zhejiang (Pearl River) in the farthest reaches of the south.
